Astana, 26 August 2010 - Kazakhstan hosts an international conference on nuclear disarmament in its capital Astana to mark the International Day against Nuclear Tests, officially observed on August 29.

The Round table to discuss the assistance to the Semipalatinsk region and priorities for 2010-2015 carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly with the United Nations in Kazakhstan take place in Astana.

Ust-Kamenogorsk based Oblast Akimat is to host regional public hearings on the draft law on access to public information developed within the UNDP project "Transparency and Access to Information and Justice in Kazakhstan" with the financial support of the British Embassy in Kazakhstan.

UNDP and the Kazakh Ministry of Labour and Social Protection held a joint meeting on the development of a long-term National Action Plan to Ensure the Rights and Improve the Quality of Life of Persons with Disabilities and a meeting on the implementation of the Kazakh Law ‘On Special Social Services’.

The campaign on installement of bus stops in the most crowded areas of the town was organized by the oralman-activists together with the UNDP/UNV.

III Astana Economic Forum has started on 1 July, 2010. This annual event that takes place at the capital of Kazakhstan has already proved its importance. This year the Forum is devoted to the issues of sustainable economic growth in post-crisis period.

A Volunteer Campaign organized by the oralman-activists together with the UNDP/UNV project “Promoting Social and Economic Intergration of Oralman” to renovate and repaire the school’s sport facilities has taken place in Molodejnoe village, Ulan region, East Kazakhstan Oblast.

An anticorruption workshop on international tools and mechanisms of countering corruption took place in Burabai national park with participants from more than 40 states and 14 international organizations. This meeting was initiated by RK Agency for fighting economic and corruption crimes together with UNDP and Transparency International.

On the 14th of June, 2010 the Forest Day Campaign was launched in Katon-Karagai district near Akmaral village by planting fast growing poplars. Five thousand seedlings of the laurel-leaved poplar were planted on the area of 1 ha. Thus, UNDP Project has laid a foundation for the long-term use of the grown wood to prevent degradation of the forest ecosystems and to ensure the recovery of the Katon-Karagai National Park forests. The fuel plantations will provide the firewood and timber supply for the local communities.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan jointly with the UN Development Program have officially opened the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) in Kazakhstan.

The International Year of Biodiversity was commemorated with the establishment of Zhongar-Alatau State National Nature Park with a total area of 356,022 ha.

A roundtable meeting on current issues on application of conciliatory procedures (or mediation) took place today in Astana. Public attention has been drawn to the draft law developed by Kazakhstani layers and practitioners with the support of UNICEF and UNDP Kazakhstan.

A round table "Adaptation to climate change: challenges and opportunities for Kazakhstan to discuss the issues on the development of the National Program on Adaptation to Climate Change was organized by UNDP / MEP RK joint project "Strengthening the capacity in the field of sustainable development through integration of climate change issues into strategic planning in the Republic of Kazakhstan”.

Residents of Sarkand and Kokzhar, Almaty Oblast, have been trained on control of apian diseases and new technologies of receiving beekeeping products during the trainings organised by GEF/UNDP project “In-Situ Conservation of Kazakhstan’s Mountainous Agrobiodiversity”.

The Project in Kazakhstan will foster partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders to facilitate development of inclusive markets - markets that involve poor as producers, suppliers and wage employees (on supply side) and as customers and users of affordable goods and services (on demand side).

The East Kazakhstan region is the home for over 20,000 repatriates, but social integration is still a challenge. The purpose of the workshop is to increase the capacity of specialists working with immigrants, as well as to teach oralmans to establish non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for implementing social projects.
